Abstract
One hundred elementary school children from higher socioeconomic families in Seoul were studied for the relationship among obesity, blood lipid levels and eating behavior. Fasting blood samples were taken and analyzed for serum triglyceride (TG),
total
cholesterol (TC), HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) and hematocrit. Informaton on eating behavior was obtained by 24 hr-recall method for 2 consecutive days and analyzed for the causal effect on obesity and blood lipid levels. Children were assessed for
height
and weight and appeared generally healthy with non-anemic hematocrit values and no clinical signs of illness. Compared to the previous year's classification by weight for length index (WLI), 75% of overweigth children had progressed into obesity
and 40%
of normal children into overweight or obesity. The degree of obesity showed a significant negative correlation with HDL-C level and significant positive correlations with the calculated LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C), LDL-C/HDL-C ratio and atherogenic
index(AI). Although TG and TC levels were much higher in overweight or obese children than normal children, the differences didn't reach statistical significance due to the individual variation. Eating behavior also showed significant correlation
s
with
blood lipid levels in such that animal food intake was positively correlated with TC and LDL-C and, vegetable intake was negativeanimal food intake was positively correlated with TC and LDL-C and, vegetable intake was negatively correlated with
them.
These findigs indicate the urgent need of nutrition education in the community to prevent further increase in childhood obesity and progress into adulthood obesity. The school lunch program along with periodic health screening and active
nutrition
intervention would be very effective in correcting eating behavior and ensuring proper mental and physical growth of these children.
